'Tis the season of eating and decorating and today I'm giving you a easy DIY that combines the two. While scrolling Pinterest for Christmas inspiration I saw a selection of gorgeous cake toppers, but my brain said "hmm, but what if you could eat it?".
So off I went on a quest to make a Christmas cake topper that you could fight over after dinner. ;) It's made of white chocolate and coated in cute, starry, sparkly and snowy sprinkles. So, let's get on with it.
You Will Need:
- White melting/baking chocolate
- Cute sprinkles
- Bamboo Skewers
- A Piping bag (or a sandwich bag with the corner snipped off, in a pinch)
- A sheet of greaseproof paper.
Melt the chocolate. I melted mine in the piping bag using the bowl-over-a-pot-of-hot-water method. Then I snipped off the end of the bag and inserted it into another piping bag that already had the nozzle inserted. Lay out a big sheet of greaseproof paper onto a smooth, flat surface like a worktop or kitchen table.
Pipe the shape of your lettering onto the greaseproof paper. I chose "NOEL" because apparently I became obsessed with this Christmassy phrase without realising. Outline it with the warm chocolate, and then fill it in to give yourself a guide for the shape of the letters. Once you have a good "layer" of chocolate, lay the skewers into the chocolate. You might need to give this some thought if your letters are less tall and straight than mine. For instance, "W" might be a little tricky.
Remove the outer piping bag with the nozzle and pipe directly from the first piping bag (the one that's simply snipped) going over your letter outlines. I mainly chose to do this as my piping nozzle was tiny and I would still be at it now if I hadn't, but if you've got a lot of patience (and a selection of nozzles) you could make these very neat and lovely. Be sure to cover all of the skewers generously - if not they could fall apart later.
Whilst the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle generously with the sprinkles, then leave them somewhere to cool for hours. I mean hours. Leave them somewhere and go and do something else. Then, when you've let them cool and harden, peel them gently off the greaseproof paper and stick the skewers into your cake. Et voila - festive cake topper that you can eat!
